How the X GIF downloader works

When someone posts a GIF on X, the platform does not keep it as a .gif file. It converts the animation into a short MP4 video with no sound and plays it on a loop. That makes GIFs load faster and look sharper, and it is why the file you save from ClipDrift ends in .mp4.

ClipDrift asks X's public embed service for the post, finds the animation and gives you the exact file X serves. We do not re-encode it, add a watermark or shrink it. The file streams from X's servers straight to your device, and we do not keep a copy.

An MP4 GIF plays and loops in modern phone galleries, browsers and messaging apps, so in practice it behaves just like a GIF. It is usually much smaller too, which helps if you save a lot of them.

Which posts work with the Twitter GIF downloader

Any public post that contains an animated GIF will work. If a post has several media items, ClipDrift lists each one so you can pick the GIF you want.

Posts from private (protected) accounts, deleted posts, age-restricted posts and posts from suspended accounts cannot be downloaded. ClipDrift can only see what X shows to someone who is not logged in.

Why is my GIF saved as an MP4 file?

Because that is how X stores it. X turns every uploaded GIF into a silent MP4 video that loops. ClipDrift gives you that original file instead of converting it, so you keep the best quality. It loops in most players and apps, just like a GIF.

Can I use this as a Twitter GIF downloader?

Why can't ClipDrift find the GIF?

The post may be private, deleted, age-restricted or from a suspended account, and ClipDrift can only reach public posts. Also check that you copied the link to the post itself, not to the profile.

Where does the GIF go after I download it?

It goes to your browser's downloads folder. On iPhone that is the Files app, where you can tap Share and then Save Video to add it to Photos. On Android it lands in Downloads and usually shows up in your gallery.

Can I turn the file into a real .gif?

Yes. Any video-to-GIF converter can do it. Keep in mind that .gif files are often several times larger and show fewer colors, so the MP4 is usually the better choice.
