How to Save Twitter Videos

A clear, step-by-step guide to saving Twitter (X) videos on iPhone, Android and computers, with no app and no account.

Updated

Works with x.com, twitter.com, fxtwitter, vxtwitter and fixupx links.

Wondering how to save Twitter videos to your phone or computer? You are not alone. X, the platform that used to be Twitter, makes it easy to watch, like and repost a clip, but it has no button for saving the video file itself.

This guide shows the quick method that works on every device, then walks through iPhone, Android and desktop step by step. You will also learn how to pick the best quality, what to do when a download fails, and how to stay safe while you do it.

How to save Twitter videos in 3 steps

The method is the same on every device. All you need is the link to the post and a web browser.

  1. 1

Copy the link to the video post

Open X (Twitter) and find the post with the video. Tap the share icon below it and choose Copy link. On a computer, you can also open the post and copy the address from the browser bar.

  2. 2

    Paste the link into ClipDrift

Open ClipDrift's X downloader in your browser, paste the link into the box and press Download. After a moment you will see a preview of the video and a list of qualities.

  3. 3

    Choose a quality and download

Pick the resolution you want and press download. The video saves to your device as an MP4 file.

What happens after you press Download

ClipDrift asks X's public embed service for the post, the same data websites use when they embed a tweet. X stores each video in several sizes, and ClipDrift lists them from best to smallest.

The file you pick streams from X's servers straight to your device. Nothing is re-encoded and no watermark is added, so you get exactly the video X plays. ClipDrift does not keep a copy.

Why you need a downloader to save X videos

X lets you like, repost, share and bookmark posts. What it does not offer is a way to save the video file to your own device.

Many people try the Twitter save option first. On X it is called Bookmarks, and it is handy for coming back to a post later. But a bookmark is only a link inside the app. You need to be online and logged in to watch it, and if the post is deleted or the account goes private, the video disappears with it.

A downloaded video is different. It is an ordinary MP4 file that plays offline, works in any app and stays on your device. If you mainly want to keep clips for good, our save tweet video tool is built for exactly that.

How to save Twitter videos on iPhone, Android and computers

The three steps above work everywhere, but each device saves files in a slightly different place. Here is what to expect on each one.

On iPhone and iPad

Safari saves downloads to the Files app. From there you can move the video into Photos.

  1. Open the X app, tap the share icon on the post and choose Copy link.
  2. Open Safari and go to clipdrift.com.
  3. Paste the link into the box and tap Download.
  4. Choose a quality. If Safari asks for confirmation, tap Download.
  5. Open the Files app, go to Downloads and tap the video.
  6. Tap the share icon and choose Save Video. It now appears in Photos.

Can't find the file? Our guide on where downloads go on iPhone explains the Files app and how to change Safari's download folder.

On Android

Android is even simpler, because downloads usually appear in your gallery automatically.

  1. Open the X app, tap the share icon on the post and choose Copy link.
  2. Open Chrome, or any browser you like, and go to clipdrift.com.
  3. Paste the link and tap Download.
  4. Choose a quality. The MP4 saves to your Downloads folder.
  5. Open your gallery or Files app to find and play the video.

On Windows, Mac and Linux

On a computer the whole process takes a few seconds.

  1. Open the post on x.com and copy the address from the browser bar.
  2. Go to clipdrift.com in a new tab and paste the link.
  3. Click Download and choose a quality.
  4. Find the MP4 in your downloads folder and open it in any media player.

Saved videos also open in video editors, so you can trim a clip or add it to a project. Our guide on trimming a downloaded Twitter video for free is a good place to start.

How to download Twitter videos in the best quality

When you download Twitter video files with ClipDrift, you see every resolution X has for that post, best first. A few simple rules help you choose.

Picking a resolution

For watching on a phone, a medium size such as 720p looks sharp and saves storage. For a laptop, a TV or editing, pick the highest option in the list.

The top option is HD only when the original upload was HD. No tool can make a video look better than the version that was posted, so if every option looks soft, the source was low quality.

The X video downloader page explains video sizes and supported link formats in more detail.

Saving GIFs and images

The same steps work for GIFs and images. X stores GIFs as short, silent MP4 videos that loop, so they download as MP4 files and keep playing on repeat in most apps. Images download at their original resolution.

If you collect reaction GIFs, the X GIF downloader explains the format and how to turn a clip into a .gif when an app requires one. For more ideas, read our guide on making a reaction GIF from a Twitter video.

Is it safe to use an X video downloader?

It is a fair question. Some download sites are crowded with pop-ups, fake buttons and requests to install extensions. A safe X video downloader runs in your browser, never asks for your X password and gives you a real video file.

ClipDrift works that way. It needs only a link, it does not store the media you download, and your IP address is used briefly in memory for rate limiting and is not saved in our database.

Whichever tool you use, watch out for these warning signs:

  • It asks for your X username, password or access to your account.
  • It wants you to install an app or browser extension first.
  • The download button opens pop-ups or unrelated software.
  • The file you get is an .exe, .apk or archive rather than a video.

Our page on whether ClipDrift is safe to use explains exactly what we collect and why.

Respecting creators matters too. Only save content you own or have permission to use, and do not repost other people's work without asking. Our guide on whether it's legal to download videos from X covers the basics.

Fixing common download problems

Most problems have a quick fix:

  • The post is unavailable: it is private, deleted, age-restricted or from a suspended account. Only public posts can be downloaded.
  • The link is not accepted: copy the link to the post itself, not to a profile or search page. Links from x.com, twitter.com, mobile.twitter.com, fxtwitter.com and vxtwitter.com all work.
  • The post has several videos: ClipDrift lists each one, so pick the one you want.
  • Too many requests: a rate limit keeps the service fast for everyone. Wait a minute and try again.
  • The video will not play: try another media player, such as VLC, or download a lower quality.
