How the X video downloader works

Every video on X is stored in several sizes so it can play smoothly on slow and fast connections. When you paste a link, ClipDrift asks X's public embed service for that post and reads the list of video files attached to it.

We sort those files from highest to lowest quality and show the resolution of each one, such as 1280x720. When you click download, the file streams from X's servers to your device. ClipDrift does not re-encode the video, so you get exactly what X serves, without a watermark.

Nothing is uploaded and no copy of the video is kept. We record only anonymous statistics, such as the media type and quality chosen, to understand how the service is used.

Choosing the right video quality

Higher resolutions look better on a big screen but take up more space. For watching on a phone, 720p is usually plenty. For editing or viewing on a TV, choose the highest option in the list.

The qualities on offer depend on the original upload. If someone posted a low-resolution clip, X only has low-resolution versions, and no downloader can add detail that was never there.
