How to Back Up Your Own X (Twitter) Videos
Your videos on X are only as safe as your account. Here is how to back up your X videos with the official archive or post by post, and where to store them.

If you post videos on X, the platform is probably the only place some of them live. That's risky. Accounts get locked, people delete old posts in a cleanup, and original files get lost when phones are replaced. Taking time to back up your X videos means your work survives no matter what happens to a post or an account.
There are two main ways to do it: request your full data archive from X, or download individual videos as you go. This guide explains both, when to use each, and how to store your backup so it stays safe and easy to search. It's written for anyone who posts on X (formerly Twitter), from casual users to creators and brands.
Why backing up matters
Accounts can be lost. Forgotten passwords, hacked accounts, suspensions or deactivation can all cut you off from your posts.
Deleted is deleted. Once you delete a post, X doesn't keep a copy you can restore.
Originals go missing. Phones break and laptops get replaced. Often the copy on X is the only one left.
Your work has value. Creators reuse clips, brands need past campaigns, and everyone has moments they want to keep.
Method 1: Request your X data archive
X lets you download an archive of your account data, including your posts and the media you've uploaded.
Open Settings and privacy.
Go to Your account.
Choose Download an archive of your data.
Confirm your password and verify your identity if asked.
Tap Request archive.
X prepares the archive and notifies you when it's ready, which can take a day or more. You then download a ZIP file. Inside, you'll find your posts and a folder of media files, along with a simple page you can open in a browser to browse your history.
Pros and cons of the archive
Pros: it's official, it covers your whole account, and it includes posts and media in one package.
Cons: it can take time to prepare, the file can be large, and media may be organized in a way that takes some sorting. It only covers your own account.
Request a fresh archive a few times a year, and always before deleting lots of posts or deactivating.
Opening and sorting the archive
Once the ZIP downloads, extract it to a folder on your computer. Open the included page in your browser to scroll through your history like a private copy of your profile. The media files themselves sit in a separate folder, often with names made of numbers. To make them useful, sort them by date, move the videos you care about into named folders, and delete duplicates. It's worth doing once properly; after that, each new archive only needs a quick sort of recent files.
Method 2: Download videos one by one
For individual videos, or when you want a copy right away, downloading each post directly is quicker.
Open the post with your video and tap the share icon.
Choose Copy link.
Paste it into the X video downloader.
Choose the highest quality and save the MP4.
This works for any of your public posts. GIFs you've posted save as small looping MP4 files through the X GIF downloader. If your account is protected, ClipDrift can't reach your posts, so use the official archive instead.
When post-by-post is best
You're about to delete a specific post.
You want a clean copy of one video to reuse. Our guide on repurposing your X videos explains how.
You only care about a handful of your best clips.
Where to store your backups
A backup on the same phone as the original isn't really a backup. Follow the simple "two places" rule: keep at least two copies, in different locations.
Cloud storage. Google Drive, iCloud Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive keep files safe if your device is lost, and make them available everywhere.
An external drive. A USB hard drive or SSD is a cheap way to keep a second copy at home.
Your computer. A dedicated folder on a laptop or desktop is fine as a working copy, but don't rely on it alone.
Organize as you go
Name files by date and topic, for example 2026-03-product-launch.mp4.
Group by year or campaign in folders.
Keep the post link in a text file alongside each video, so you know where it was published.
Note the context. A line about what the video was for, such as a launch, an event or a reply to a customer, helps future you decide whether it's worth reusing.
Check your backups actually work
A backup you've never opened is a backup you can't trust. Every so often, open a few videos from each location and make sure they play, have sound and are the size you expect. Cloud services occasionally fail to finish uploads, and external drives can wear out over time, so a quick check once or twice a year is time well spent.
Download any X video in seconds
Paste a post link below to save the video, GIF or image in the best quality.
Works with x.com, twitter.com, fxtwitter, vxtwitter and fixupx links.
Keep your original files too
A download from X has been compressed by X. Your original export, the file you uploaded, is the highest quality version you will ever have. Get into the habit of saving originals in the same archive. If you edit on a phone, export a copy to your cloud drive before posting. Our guides on where downloads go on iPhone and on Android explain how to find and move files.
A simple backup routine
After posting an important video, save the original export to your cloud folder.
Once a month, download any recent videos you didn't keep originals of.
Every few months, request a full X archive and store it with your other backups.
Once a year, check that your backups open and play.
It takes a few minutes each month and protects years of work.
A note on other people's content
This guide is about your own videos. Downloading other creators' content for your archive is a different matter. Only download content you own or have permission to use. You can save your own media from any public post on the ClipDrift homepage.
FAQ
How do I download all my videos from X at once?
Request an archive of your data in Settings and privacy, under Your account. It includes your posts and uploaded media.
How long does the X data archive take?
It can take a day or more to prepare. X notifies you when it's ready to download.
Can I back up videos from a protected account?
The official archive works for your own protected account. ClipDrift only works with public posts.
Does downloading my video from X reduce quality?
The download is the file X serves, which was compressed once by X. Your original export is higher quality, so keep it too.
Where should I store video backups?
In at least two places, such as a cloud drive and an external hard drive.
Should I back up before deleting old posts?
Yes. Once a post is deleted, X doesn't keep a copy you can restore, so download anything you want to keep first.
