Threads are one of the best formats on X. A creator can walk you through a recipe, a news story or a product launch across a dozen posts, with a short video in several of them. The trouble starts when you want to keep those clips. If you try to download videos from an X thread by pasting the link to the first post, you will usually get only the media in that first post.
The reason is simple: on X (formerly Twitter), every post in a thread is its own post with its own link. This guide shows you how to find each video, copy the right link and save the whole set in a few minutes.
Why one link doesn't download a whole thread
A thread looks like one long piece of content, but behind the scenes it is a chain of separate posts. Each reply in the chain points back to the post before it. When you paste a link into a downloader, the tool looks up exactly one post and the media attached to it.
That design is actually helpful. It means you can pick only the clips you want instead of downloading everything at once. It also means you need to know how to reach each individual post quickly, which is the part most people find fiddly.
What counts as "the post" with the video
The video belongs to the post where it was uploaded. If someone quotes another post that has a video, the video still belongs to the original. If you are unsure, tap on the video itself: X usually opens the post it belongs to, and that is the link you need.
How to download videos from an X thread, step by step
The process is the same on a phone or a computer. You repeat it once for every video you want.
Open the thread and scroll to the first post with a video.
Tap on that post (not the video) so it opens on its own page.
Tap the share icon and choose Copy link. On a computer you can also copy the address from the browser bar.
Open the X video downloader in a new tab, paste the link and press Download.
Choose a quality. The MP4 saves to your device.
Go back to the thread and repeat for the next post with a video.
Keeping the downloader open in its own tab saves a lot of time. You can switch between the thread and ClipDrift without losing your place.
Posts with more than one video
A single post on X can contain up to four media items. When you paste a link like that, ClipDrift shows each video, GIF or image as a separate result, so you can download all of them or only the one you need. If one of the items is a GIF, it saves as a small looping MP4, because that is how X stores GIFs. The X GIF downloader page explains why.
Keeping a thread's clips organized
A thread tells a story in order, and it is easy to lose that order once the files land in a downloads folder with similar names. A little organization goes a long way.
Create a folder first. Name it after the thread's topic or author before you start.
Number your files. Rename each download as you go, for example 01-intro.mp4, 02-setup.mp4 and so on.
Save the thread link. Paste the link to the first post into a note inside the same folder, so you can find the source later.
Keep the text if you need it. Downloading saves the video, not the words around it. If the captions matter, copy them into the same note.
On iPhone, files go to the Files app, and on Android they go to your Downloads folder. Our guides on where downloads go on iPhone and where downloads go on Android show how to find and move them.

When a video in the thread won't download
Most threads download without a problem, but a few situations can stop a single post from working.
The post is private or deleted. ClipDrift can only see public posts. If an account is protected, its videos are not available.
The post is age-restricted. Posts marked as sensitive may not be reachable without logging in, so they can fail.
You copied the wrong link. If you copied the link to a reply that only quotes the video, open the original post and copy that link instead.
The video is a link preview. Some posts show a preview card for a video hosted on another website, such as YouTube. That video is not stored on X, so an X downloader cannot save it.

Respecting the creator's work
Threads often take hours to research and film. Saving a clip for your own reference is very different from reposting someone's work as your own. Only download content you own or have permission to use, and credit the creator if you share it with their permission. If you are planning to reuse clips in your own content, read our guide on how to ask permission to repost a video from X first.
It is also worth checking whether the creator already offers the full video elsewhere, such as on a website or another platform. Linking to the original is often the simplest and most respectful option.

FAQ
Can I download a whole X thread at once?
Not with a single link. Each post in a thread is separate, so you paste the link of each post that contains a video. It only takes a few seconds per clip once the downloader is open in its own tab.
How do I get the link to one post in a thread?
Tap the post itself so it opens on its own page, then tap the share icon and choose Copy link. On a computer, you can copy the address from the browser bar after opening the post.
Why did I get the wrong video from a thread?
You probably copied the link to a different post in the chain, such as a reply that quotes the video. Open the post where the video was uploaded and copy that link instead.
Does downloading a thread video notify the author?
No. ClipDrift reads public post data and does not interact with the post or the account, so the author is not notified.
Can I save the text of a thread too?
ClipDrift saves media files, not the text of posts. If you need the words, copy them into a note and keep it in the same folder as your videos.
Is it free to download videos from an X thread?
Yes. ClipDrift is free to use with no account. Just remember to only save content you have the right to use.
