It's a question many people quietly wonder about before saving a clip: can people see if you download their X video? Maybe it's a friend's post, a creator you follow, or a video from someone you'd rather not interact with. The short answer is no. X (formerly Twitter) doesn't notify creators when someone downloads their video, and it doesn't show them a list of people who saved it.
This article explains what creators can and can't see on X, how downloading tools work behind the scenes, what information a downloader might collect about you, and why downloading privately still comes with a responsibility to respect the creator.
What creators can see on X
When you interact with a post, some actions are public and some are private.
Visible to the creator and often to others:
Likes, in many cases, depending on X's current visibility settings.
Reposts and quotes, which show your name.
Replies, which appear under the post.
Follows, which show up in their followers list.
Shown only as totals:
Views, shown as a number on the post.
Bookmarks, shown as a count, but not who bookmarked.
Not shown at all:
Screenshots and screen recordings.
Downloads made with external tools.
Simply watching a video without interacting.
Why downloads aren't visible
When you paste a link into a downloader, the tool looks up the post's publicly available media and gives you the file. It doesn't like, repost, reply or follow anything, and it doesn't log in to X with your account. From X's point of view, the request isn't connected to your profile at all. It looks much the same as a video being played in an embedded post on a news site or blog, which happens all the time without anyone being identified.
That's also why no legitimate downloader needs your X password. If a tool asks you to sign in or authorize access to your account, treat it as a red flag. Our guide on spotting fake download buttons and unsafe downloaders explains what to look out for.
What about views?
Watching a video on X can count toward its view total, just like scrolling past a post. But the creator sees only the number, never a list of who watched. Downloading through an external tool doesn't add your name anywhere either.
What a downloader might know about you
Even though the creator can't see your download, the website you use might collect some information, like any website. That's why it's worth choosing tools with clear privacy policies.
ClipDrift, for example, keeps data collection to a minimum:
Download statistics are anonymous: the post ID, media type, quality and your country, with no IP address or personal identifier attached.
Your IP address is used briefly in memory to prevent abuse and isn't stored in our database.
The videos you download aren't stored on our servers.
You can read the details on our safety and privacy page. If a downloader has no privacy policy at all, consider that a warning sign.
Does the creator know if you share it?
Downloading is invisible, but what you do afterward may not be.
Sending it privately in a chat doesn't notify anyone on X.
Reposting it publicly on X or another platform is visible to everyone, including potentially the creator.
Using it commercially, like in an ad, can easily come to the creator's attention, and may infringe their rights.
If you plan to share someone's video publicly, our guide on asking permission to repost a video from X explains how to ask politely.

Works with x.com, twitter.com, fxtwitter, vxtwitter and fixupx links.
What about screenshots and screen recordings?
X doesn't notify people when you take a screenshot or record your screen, either. Some messaging apps do send screenshot alerts in certain situations, but X's timeline and posts don't. So whether you download a video, screenshot it, or record it, the creator won't get an alert.
The difference is quality. A screen recording captures your phone's interface, re-compresses the video and is limited to your screen's resolution. Downloading gives you the original file X serves, so it looks much better. Our comparison of screen recording vs downloading explains this in detail.
Can X itself see your downloads?
When a downloader requests a video file from X's media servers, X sees a technical request for that file, just as it does whenever a video plays anywhere on the web. It isn't tied to your X account, because you're not logged in through the tool. The creator doesn't see anything, and it doesn't appear in any public part of your profile.
Your own device and accounts
Your downloads do leave traces on your own device: the file in your Downloads folder, your browser history, and possibly a copy in a cloud backup if you have one. If you share a device or a cloud account with others, they may see what you've saved. Clearing your browser history or deleting files you no longer need keeps your device tidy and private.
Protected accounts and private content
If an account is protected, only approved followers can see its posts. External tools can't access those posts, because they aren't public. ClipDrift only works with public posts.
If you follow a protected account, be especially thoughtful. The person chose to limit who sees their content, and downloading and sharing it beyond that circle goes against their wishes, even if it's technically possible to record your screen.
Downloading respectfully
Being able to download privately is a convenience, not permission. A few simple principles keep things fair:
Personal use only, unless you have permission.
Credit the creator if you share with permission. Our guide on crediting creators when you share clips has examples.
Respect protected accounts and people who aren't public figures.
Honor takedown requests if a creator asks you to remove something you posted.
When you do need to save a public clip for personal use, paste the link into the X video downloader, or the X GIF downloader for GIFs. Only download content you own or have permission to use. You can start any download from the ClipDrift homepage.
