Reaction GIFs are the shorthand of group chats, and X (formerly Twitter) is full of great ones. The problem is that the X app does not let you keep them. You can like the post or bookmark it, but you can't drop the GIF into a WhatsApp chat later. If you want to save X GIFs on Android, you need a quick workaround, and it takes less than a minute.

This guide shows how to save a GIF, where it lands on your phone, why it arrives as an MP4 file, and how to send it in your favorite messaging apps.

Why X GIFs save as MP4 files

When someone uploads a GIF to X, the platform converts it into a short MP4 video with no sound. It plays on a loop, so it looks like a GIF, but the file is smaller and sharper than a real .gif. When you download it, you get that MP4 file.

This surprises a lot of people, but it is good news. MP4 GIFs take up less space, load faster and keep more colors. Our article on why Twitter GIFs are saved as MP4 files goes into more detail.

Do MP4 GIFs have sound?

No. GIFs on X are silent, and the MP4 you download is silent too. If a clip on X has sound, it was uploaded as a video, not a GIF, and it will download as a normal video with audio. You can tell the difference on X itself: GIFs usually show a small "GIF" label in the corner and loop automatically, while videos show a timer and a speaker icon.

How to save X GIFs on Android

  1. Open the post with the GIF in the X app.

  2. Tap the share icon and choose Copy link.

  3. Open Chrome (or any browser) and go to the X GIF downloader.

  4. Paste the link and tap Download.

  5. Tap the download button under the GIF preview.

The GIF is now an MP4 file in your Download folder. If you can't find it, our guide on where downloads go on Android explains each place to look.

Saving several GIFs quickly

If you are building a collection of reactions, keep ClipDrift open in a Chrome tab. Switch to X, copy a link, switch back, paste and download. Rename each file as you go, for example "applause.mp4" or "facepalm.mp4", so you can find it later.

If a post contains a GIF alongside photos or videos, ClipDrift lists every item separately. Look for the one marked as a GIF and download only that. This keeps your collection clean and saves storage, since you are not downloading media you don't need.

How to send a saved GIF in chat apps

WhatsApp

  1. Open the chat and tap the attachment icon.

  2. Choose Gallery and select your saved file.

  3. WhatsApp may show a GIF toggle for short clips. Turn it on to send it as a looping GIF, or leave it off to send it as a video.

Telegram

Telegram handles silent MP4 files well. Attach the file from your gallery and it will usually play on a loop in the chat, just like a GIF.

Google Messages and other SMS apps

Attach the file from your gallery. It will be sent as a short video. If you need a real .gif because the app or recipient requires one, convert it first, as explained below.

Discord and Signal

Discord plays MP4 files directly in the chat, so you can upload the saved file as it is. Some people prefer to paste the original X link instead, which shows a preview with the creator's name. Signal also accepts the MP4 as a short video. In both apps, keeping the file short and small means it sends quickly, even on mobile data.

When you need a real .gif file

Some apps, websites and older phones only accept files that end in .gif. In that case, convert the MP4.

  • On your phone. Many free converter apps in the Play Store turn a video into a GIF. Look for one with good reviews and no unusual permissions.

  • On a computer. Free tools such as ffmpeg or online converters can do it in seconds.

Keep in mind that .gif files are often much bigger than the MP4 and show fewer colors. Our guide on turning an X GIF into a real .gif file shows the best settings.

Download any X video in seconds

Paste a post link below to save the video, GIF or image in the best quality.

Works with x.com, twitter.com, fxtwitter, vxtwitter and fixupx links.

Making your own reaction GIFs

You don't have to rely on GIFs that already exist. You can save a regular video from X with the X video downloader, trim the moment you want, and turn it into a reaction clip. Our guide on making a reaction GIF from a Twitter video walks through it step by step.

Organizing your GIF collection

A good reaction library is only useful if you can find the right GIF in a hurry. A few minutes of setup pays off every time you open a chat.

  • One folder for reactions. In your files app, create a folder called "Reactions" and move every saved GIF into it. Most gallery apps will show it as its own album.

  • Descriptive names. Rename files by mood or meaning, such as "yes.mp4", "no-way.mp4" or "slow-clap.mp4". Search then finds them instantly.

  • Favorites. Mark your most-used GIFs as favorites in your gallery app so they appear at the top.

  • Prune regularly. Delete the ones you never use. A short list of great reactions beats a long list of maybes.

You can save new ones from any public post using the ClipDrift X downloader on the homepage, which handles GIFs, videos and images in the same box.

A note on sharing

GIFs feel like public property, but many are made by artists, studios or individual creators. Using a GIF in a private chat is very different from posting it to promote a business. Only save and share content you own or have permission to use, and credit the creator when it makes sense.
