If videos on X look blurry, eat through your mobile data, or start playing loudly when you scroll, the fix is usually in your settings. X has several options that control how videos load and play, but they are tucked a few menus deep, and the names have changed more than once since the platform was called Twitter. This guide explains the main X video settings in plain English: what each one does, where to find it, and which combination makes sense for different situations.
Menu names can shift slightly between app updates and between iPhone, Android and the website. If something isn't exactly where described, use the search box at the top of the Settings screen and type the setting's name.
Where to find the video settings
On the mobile app:
Tap your profile picture to open the menu.
Tap Settings and privacy.
Tap Accessibility, display and languages.
Tap Data usage.
On the website, open More in the sidebar, then Settings and privacy, then Accessibility, display and languages, and look for Data usage.
This screen holds most of the options covered below.
High-quality video
This setting controls whether X streams the best version of a video it has, or a lower-resolution version to save data.
On cellular or Wi-Fi. Always tries to play the highest quality. Videos look sharp, but use more mobile data.
Only on Wi-Fi. Plays high quality at home or work, and lower quality on mobile data. This is the best balance for most people.
Never. Always plays a lower quality.
If videos look soft even on good Wi-Fi, check this setting first. Keep in mind that the original upload also matters: a video posted in low resolution can't look sharp no matter what you choose.
Uploading high-quality video
On some versions of the app, the same screen includes an option for uploading high-quality video. If you post your own clips, turning this on helps them stay sharp after upload. Our guide on making your X videos look sharp covers upload tips in more detail.
Video autoplay
Autoplay decides whether videos start playing on their own as you scroll.
On cellular or Wi-Fi. Videos always autoplay.
Only on Wi-Fi. Videos autoplay at home, but wait for a tap on mobile data.
Never. Videos only play when you tap them.
Autoplay is the setting with the biggest impact on mobile data, because videos start loading even if you scroll past them. On a busy timeline, that can mean dozens of clips loading in a single session, most of which you never actually watch. Setting it to Wi-Fi only, or Never, can make a noticeable difference to your data use and battery life. Autoplayed videos usually start muted; tap the speaker icon to turn the sound on.
Data saver
Data saver is a single switch that reduces data use across the app. When it's on, images load in lower quality and videos don't autoplay. You can still tap an image or video to load it in higher quality when you want to.
It is useful on a limited data plan, when roaming abroad, or when your connection is slow. Turning on Data saver overrides some of the other options, so if videos look worse than expected, check whether it's switched on.
Your phone's own data settings
Your phone has data controls too, and they work alongside X's settings. On iPhone, Low Data Mode (in Settings, under Cellular or Wi-Fi) tells apps to reduce background data. On Android, Data Saver in the network settings limits what apps can use in the background. If videos refuse to load at all on mobile data, check that X is allowed to use cellular data in your phone's settings. These system switches are easy to forget, and they can make X look broken when it is simply following your phone's rules.

Works with x.com, twitter.com, fxtwitter, vxtwitter and fixupx links.
Captions and accessibility
X can show captions on videos when the uploader provides them, or when captions are generated automatically. Look for the Accessibility section in the same area of settings, where you can find options related to captions and to reducing motion. Captions are helpful in noisy places, in quiet places where you can't play sound, and for anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing.
If you post videos yourself, adding captions makes them more accessible and often more engaging, since many people scroll with the sound off.
Recommended combinations
On an unlimited plan
Set High-quality video to On cellular or Wi-Fi and Autoplay to On cellular or Wi-Fi. You get the best viewing experience with no compromise.
On a limited plan (most people)
Set High-quality video to Only on Wi-Fi and Autoplay to Only on Wi-Fi. Videos look great at home and stay light on mobile data.
When traveling or on a slow connection
Turn on Data saver. Tap the videos you actually want to watch.
To save battery
Set Autoplay to Never. Fewer videos playing in the background means less work for your phone.
Settings don't keep videos for you
These settings only control how videos play inside X. They don't save anything to your device. If a post is deleted, or you are offline, you can't watch it, no matter how your settings are configured.
If you want to keep a clip in full quality, download it. Paste the post link into the X video downloader and choose the highest resolution X has. For GIFs, the X GIF downloader saves them as small looping files. Our comparison of X bookmarks vs downloading explains when each approach makes sense.
Downloaded videos play offline, in any app, without using data again. Only download content you own or have permission to use. You can start any download from the ClipDrift homepage.
FAQ
Why do videos on X look blurry?
Check that High-quality video is set to On cellular or Wi-Fi, or Only on Wi-Fi if you're on Wi-Fi, and that Data saver is off. The original upload quality also limits how sharp a video can look.
How do I stop videos from autoplaying on X?
Go to Settings and privacy, Accessibility, display and languages, Data usage, then set Video autoplay to Never or Only on Wi-Fi.
Does Data saver affect videos?
Yes. With Data saver on, videos don't autoplay and media loads at lower quality until you tap it.
How can I reduce X's mobile data usage?
Set autoplay and high-quality video to Wi-Fi only, or turn on Data saver.
Do these settings change downloaded videos?
No. They only affect playback inside X. Downloaded files keep the quality you chose when you saved them.
How do I turn on captions for X videos?
Look in the Accessibility section of your settings. Captions appear when the uploader adds them or when they are generated automatically.
