Almost everything you might want to do with a post outside the app starts with one small action: copying its link. You need it to share a post in a group chat, to save it in your notes, or to download a video with a tool like ClipDrift. Yet many people are not sure how to copy the link to an X post, especially on a phone where there is no address bar in the app.

This guide shows the quickest way on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac. It also explains what a post link looks like on X (formerly Twitter), so you can tell at a glance whether you copied the right one.

What a post link looks like

Every post on X has its own address. It follows a simple pattern: the website, the account's username, the word "status", and a long number that identifies the post. For example, a link might look like x.com/username/status/ followed by a string of digits.

That number is what matters. It is unique to one post, and it is what tools like ClipDrift use to find the media. You may also see older links that start with twitter.com instead of x.com. They work the same way, because X kept the old domain pointing to the new one. Our article on twitter.com vs x.com links explains the change.

When you copy a link from the app, it sometimes ends with a question mark followed by extra characters, such as "?s=20" or "?t=". These are tracking or sharing details added by the app. They don't change which post the link opens, and most tools ignore them. If you want a clean link to share, you can delete everything from the question mark onward.

You may also come across links on alternative domains such as fxtwitter.com or vxtwitter.com. People use them because they show richer previews in chat apps like Discord. They still contain the same username and post number, so they point to the same post.

  1. Open the X app and find the post.

  2. Tap the share icon below the post. It looks like an arrow pointing up out of a box, or a curved arrow, depending on your app version.

  3. Choose Copy link. A short message confirms the link was copied.

  4. Paste it wherever you need it by tapping and holding in a text field, then choosing Paste.

If you are viewing X in Safari instead of the app, you can also tap the post to open it, then tap the address bar and copy the link from there.

  1. Open the X app and find the post.

  2. Tap the share icon below the post.

  3. Choose Copy link. Some Android phones show a small preview at the bottom of the screen to confirm it.

  4. Long-press in any text field and choose Paste.

On some devices, the share icon opens the Android share menu first. If you don't see Copy link straight away, look for it at the top of that menu.

On a computer you have two options.

  • From the address bar. Click the post so it opens on its own page. Then click the browser's address bar and copy the link with Ctrl+C on Windows or Linux, or Cmd+C on a Mac.

  • From the share icon. Click the share icon under the post and choose Copy link. This works even when you are scrolling your feed.

The share icon is the safer choice when you are in a long thread, because it always copies the link of that specific post.

Download any X video in seconds

Paste a post link below to save the video, GIF or image in the best quality.

Works with x.com, twitter.com, fxtwitter, vxtwitter and fixupx links.

Most problems come from copying a link that is not a post link at all. Watch out for these:

  • Profile links. A link that ends in a username with no "status" and number points to a profile, not a post.

  • Search or hashtag links. These open a list of results, not one post.

  • The main post instead of a reply. In a conversation, each reply has its own link. Open the reply before copying. Our guide to saving a video from a reply or quote post covers this in detail.

  • Extra text pasted with the link. Some apps add a sentence before the link when you share. If a tool rejects your paste, delete everything except the link itself.

Sharing a post link the right way

A link is the most respectful way to share someone's post, because it sends people to the original and keeps the creator's name, replies and context attached. Before you send one, a couple of quick checks help.

  • Open it yourself first. Paste the link into your browser to confirm it opens the post you meant, not a reply or a profile.

  • Remember privacy. If the account is protected, people who don't follow it will see an error instead of the post.

  • Add a short note. In a group chat, a line of context explains why the post is worth a look, especially if the preview doesn't load.

If the post might be deleted and you need the video for a project, a link alone won't protect you. That is when saving the file makes sense.

What you can do with a post link

Once you have the link, you can share it, save it, or use it to download the media in the post.

ClipDrift also accepts share links from fxtwitter.com, vxtwitter.com and fixupx.com, and even the post number on its own. Only download content you own or have permission to use.

FAQ

Where is the share icon on X?

It sits in the row of icons under each post, next to the like and bookmark icons. On most versions it looks like an arrow pointing up or a curved arrow.

Yes. Links that start with twitter.com still open the same post on x.com, and ClipDrift accepts both.

How do I know I copied a post link and not a profile link?

A post link contains the word "status" followed by a long number. A profile link ends with the username and has no number.

You can copy it if you follow the account, but people who don't follow it, and tools like ClipDrift, cannot open it. Only public posts can be downloaded.

Some apps add a short message when you share. Delete everything before and after the link so only the address remains.

Is copying a post's link the same as downloading it?

No. A link only points to the post. To keep the video itself, paste the link into a downloader and save the file.
