Some of the best videos on X never appear in your main feed. They show up in replies under a popular post, or inside a quote post where someone adds their own comment on top of another person's clip. If you try to save a video from a reply or quote post, it is easy to copy the wrong link and end up with nothing, or with a different video from the one you wanted.
The fix is understanding which post actually owns the video. This guide explains the difference between replies, quote posts and reposts on X (formerly Twitter), and shows exactly which link to copy in each case.
Replies, quotes and reposts: what's the difference?
X has three ways to respond to a post, and each one handles media differently.
Reply. A new post written underneath another post. If the person attaches a video to their reply, that video belongs to the reply.
Quote post. A new post that embeds another post inside it, with added comment on top. The embedded post keeps its own media. The person quoting can also attach their own video, but that is less common.
Repost. A straight share of someone else's post, with nothing added. It points to the original, so the video is the original's.
Once you know which of these you are looking at, finding the right link takes seconds.
How to save a video from a reply
Replies are the simplest case, because the video is attached directly to the reply.
Open the conversation and find the reply with the video.
Tap the reply so it opens on its own page. Its address will end in a different number from the post it replies to.
Tap the share icon and choose Copy link.
Paste the link into the ClipDrift X downloader and press Download.
Choose a quality and save the MP4.
A common mistake with replies
Many people copy the link of the main post at the top of the conversation, then wonder why the downloader shows a different video, or no video at all. The main post and each reply are separate posts with separate links. Always open the reply itself before copying.
Replies in long conversations
Popular posts can collect thousands of replies, and X does not always show them in the order they were written. Replies may be ranked by relevance, and some are hidden behind a "Show more replies" or "Show probable spam" link. If you saw a video in a reply earlier and can't find it again, try opening the replier's profile and checking their Replies tab. Once you find it, open the reply on its own page and copy that link.
It also helps to copy the link as soon as you see a clip you like. Long conversations move quickly, and coming back later can mean scrolling for a long time.
How to save a video from a quote post
Quote posts are where most mix-ups happen. When you see a video inside a quote post, it is usually shown inside the embedded box, which means it belongs to the original post being quoted.
Tap the embedded box (the quoted post), not the comment above it.
X opens the original post on its own page.
Tap the share icon on that original post and choose Copy link.
Paste it into the X video downloader and press Download.
If the person quoting has attached their own video above the embedded box, that video belongs to the quote post. In that case, copy the quote post's link instead. When a quote post contains both, you can save each one with its own link.
What if the quoted post was deleted?
If the original post was deleted or the account went private, the embedded box shows a message instead of the video. The video is no longer publicly available, so no downloader can retrieve it. ClipDrift only works with public posts.
Download any X video in seconds
Paste a post link below to save the video, GIF or image in the best quality.
Works with x.com, twitter.com, fxtwitter, vxtwitter and fixupx links.
How to save a video from a repost
A repost is not a new post. It simply shows the original post in your feed with a small label saying who reposted it. Tap the post to open the original, copy its link, and download it as usual. The result is identical, because there is only one video.
Tips for getting the right file every time
Check the address. Every post on X has a unique number at the end of its link. If two links end in the same number, they are the same post.
Tap the video to confirm. Tapping a video often opens the post it belongs to. Copy the link from there.
Look for several results. If a post contains more than one media item, ClipDrift lists each one separately so you can choose.
GIFs save as MP4. If the clip in a reply is a GIF, it downloads as a looping MP4. The X GIF downloader explains why.

Working with an old link that starts with twitter.com? It works exactly the same way. Paste it into the Twitter video downloader and ClipDrift finds the post on X. If you plan to keep the clip on your phone, the steps in our guides on where downloads go on iPhone and on Android show where the file ends up and how to move it into your gallery.
Credit and permission
Replies and quote posts often contain clips from people who are not the original creator. Before you save and share anything, think about who made it. Saving for personal reference is one thing; reposting is another. Only download content you own or have permission to use, and credit the creator when you share it. Our guide on how to credit creators when you share clips has simple examples.
FAQ
Why does the downloader show a different video from the one in the reply?
You most likely copied the link of the main post rather than the reply. Open the reply on its own page and copy that link instead.
Which link do I copy for a quote post?
If the video is inside the embedded box, tap the box to open the original post and copy that link. If the person quoting attached their own video, copy the quote post's link.
Can I save a video from a reply on a private account?
No. ClipDrift can only reach public posts. Replies from protected accounts are not available.
Can I download several videos from one reply?
Yes. A single post can contain up to four media items, and ClipDrift lists each one separately so you can save the ones you want.
Do reposts have their own video file?
No. A repost points to the original post, so the video is the same file. Copy the original post's link and download it.
Does the person who posted the reply get notified?
No. ClipDrift reads public post data and does not interact with the post or the account, so nobody is notified.
