You saved a two-minute video from X, but the part you actually need is eight seconds long. Sending or posting the whole thing is slow, and nobody wants to scrub through a long clip to find the good bit. The fix is to trim a downloaded Twitter video down to the moment that matters. You don't need paid software: every phone and computer already has a free tool that can do it.

This guide covers the built-in options on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac, plus a free command-line method for cutting without any loss in quality. It assumes you have already saved the video from X (formerly Twitter); if not, the first section shows how.

First, save the video from X

  1. On X, tap the share icon under the post and choose Copy link.

  2. Paste it into the ClipDrift X video downloader.

  3. Choose a quality and save the MP4.

If you plan to post the trimmed clip or show it on a big screen, pick the highest resolution available. For a quick chat, a medium size is fine. If the clip is a GIF, use the X GIF downloader; GIFs save as short looping MP4 files and can be trimmed the same way.

How to trim on iPhone

The Photos app has a simple trimmer built in.

  1. Move the video into Photos (in Files, tap Share, then Save Video).

  2. Open it in Photos and tap Edit.

  3. Drag the yellow handles at each end of the timeline.

  4. Tap Done and choose Save Video as New Clip.

Press and hold a handle to zoom the timeline for precise cuts. Our detailed guide on trimming a Twitter video on iPhone also covers iMovie for cutting the middle of a clip.

How to trim on Android

Most Android phones offer at least one built-in option.

Google Photos

  1. Open the video in Google Photos and tap Edit.

  2. Under the Video tab, drag the handles on the timeline to set the start and end.

  3. Tap Save copy to keep the original.

Open the video, tap the Edit (pencil) icon, and use the trim tool. The wording varies by brand, but the handles work the same way. Always look for a "Save as copy" option.

If you can't find the file, our guide on where downloads go on Android shows how to locate it and make it appear in your gallery.

How to trim on Windows

Photos app

Open the video with Photos, choose Trim, drag the handles and save a copy. It is the quickest way for a simple cut.

Clipchamp (Windows 11)

Clipchamp is Microsoft's free editor, included with Windows 11.

  1. Open Clipchamp from the Start menu and create a new video.

  2. Import your MP4 and drag it onto the timeline.

  3. Move the playhead to a cut point and use the Split tool.

  4. Select the parts you don't want and delete them.

  5. Click Export and choose a resolution.

Clipchamp can also join clips, add captions and crop for vertical formats. Our guide on downloading Twitter videos on Windows covers where files go and how to play them.

How to trim on a Mac

QuickTime Player, included with every Mac, trims in seconds.

  1. Open the video in QuickTime Player.

  2. Press Cmd+T (or choose Edit, then Trim).

  3. Drag the yellow handles and click Trim.

  4. Choose File, then Save or Export As.

For cutting out the middle or combining clips, use iMovie, which is free from the Mac App Store. Our guide on downloading X videos on a Mac has more Mac tips.

Lossless trimming with ffmpeg

Most editors re-encode the video when they save, which takes time and can slightly reduce quality. ffmpeg is a free, open-source command-line tool that can cut a clip without re-encoding at all.

Once ffmpeg is installed, a command like this keeps the section from 5 to 15 seconds:

ffmpeg -ss 00:00:05 -to 00:00:15 -i input.mp4 -c copy output.mp4

The "-c copy" part tells ffmpeg to copy the video and audio streams as they are. The result is instant and identical in quality. One catch: without re-encoding, cuts can only happen on certain frames called keyframes, so the start may shift by a fraction of a second. If you need a frame-exact cut, remove "-c copy" and let ffmpeg re-encode.

Tips for a cleaner trim

  • Leave a short lead-in. Start a moment before the key action so the clip doesn't feel abrupt.

  • End on a natural pause. Avoid cutting in the middle of a word or movement.

  • Check the audio. Play the trimmed clip with sound on before sharing.

  • Keep the original. Save trims as copies, so you can always go back.

  • Mind the length. If you plan to share in a chat or on social media, shorter clips send faster and are more likely to be watched to the end.

  • Name the file clearly. Rename the trimmed copy with what it shows, such as "goal-replay.mp4", so you can tell it apart from the full download.

Trim first, then compress

If a clip is still too big after trimming, compress it as a last step. Trimming first means the compressor has less video to process, so the result is smaller and finishes faster. Our guide on compressing a video without losing quality explains the best free settings.

Sharing your trimmed clip

Once trimmed, the clip is ready for chats, slides or social posts. Our guide on sharing an X video on WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok explains how to keep quality high on each platform.

Trimming someone else's video doesn't make it yours. Only download, trim and share content you own or have permission to use, and credit the original creator. You can save more clips any time from the ClipDrift homepage.

FAQ

What is the easiest way to trim a downloaded Twitter video?

Use the built-in editor on your device: Photos on iPhone and Windows, Google Photos or your gallery on Android, and QuickTime Player on a Mac.

Does trimming reduce video quality?

Most editors re-encode when saving, which can slightly reduce quality. Lossless tools like ffmpeg with "-c copy" keep the exact original quality.

Can I cut out the middle of a video?

Not with simple trimmers, which only cut the start and end. Use iMovie, Clipchamp or another editor with a split tool.

Will trimming change the video's resolution?

No, unless you choose a lower resolution when exporting. The trimmed clip keeps the resolution you downloaded.

Can I trim a GIF saved from X?

Yes. GIFs from X save as MP4 files, so you can trim them with the same tools as any video.

Do I need to pay for a video editor?

No. Every method in this guide is free and either built into your device or open source.
