Often you only need a small part of a clip. Maybe it is the five seconds where the goal goes in, or the one line of a speech you want to send to a friend. Sending the whole video is slow and a little lazy. The good news is that you can trim a Twitter video on iPhone with the Photos app that is already on your phone, with no extra download and no subscription.
This guide starts from a video you have already saved from X (formerly Twitter). If you haven't saved it yet, the first section shows how in under a minute.
Step 1: Save the video from X to your iPhone
The X app does not let you save videos directly, so start with a browser tool.
In the X app, tap the share icon on the post and choose Copy link.
Open Safari and go to the ClipDrift X downloader.
Paste the link, tap Download and pick a quality.
Open the Files app, go to Downloads, tap the video, then tap Share and Save Video.
The video is now in Photos. If you can't find it in Files, our guide on where downloads go on iPhone explains the folders.
Pick the right quality before you trim
When you paste a link into the X video downloader, you see every resolution X has for that video. If you plan to post the trimmed clip somewhere or show it on a bigger screen, choose the highest option. If it is just for a quick chat, a medium size is fine and saves space. Trimming shortens a video, but it never adds detail, so the quality you download is the best you will get.
Step 2: Trim the video in Photos
Open Photos and tap the video.
Tap Edit in the top corner.
Make sure the video tab (a small camera icon) is selected at the bottom.
Drag the left handle of the timeline to where you want the clip to start.
Drag the right handle to where you want it to end. The frame turns yellow to show the trimmed section.
Tap the play button to preview your clip.
Tap Done.
Save as a new clip, not over the original
When you tap Done, Photos usually asks how to save. Choose Save Video as New Clip if you want to keep the full version as well. If you choose Save Video, Photos replaces the original in your library, although you can still restore it later through Edit and Revert.
Fine-tuning your trim
The timeline can feel small when you are trying to land on an exact moment. A few tricks help:
Hold a handle. Press and hold a handle for a moment and the timeline zooms in, so you can move frame by frame.
Rotate your phone. In landscape the timeline is wider and easier to control.
Preview often. Play the clip after each change, especially if it ends in the middle of a word.
Leave a little breathing room. Starting a fraction of a second before the key moment, and ending just after it, makes the clip feel natural instead of abrupt.
A well-trimmed clip is usually much shorter than people expect. If the point of the video is one reaction or one line, three to ten seconds is often enough, and a short clip sends faster and is more likely to be watched to the end.
Other quick edits in Photos
While you are in Edit mode, Photos offers a few more basic tools:
Crop and rotate to remove black bars or turn a sideways video.
Adjust brightness, contrast and color if a clip looks dark.
Mute the sound by tapping the speaker icon at the top of the editor.
For more advanced edits, such as joining clips or adding text, iMovie is a free option from Apple. Our guide on trimming a downloaded Twitter video for free covers more tools across phones and computers.
Download any X video in seconds
Paste a post link below to save the video, GIF or image in the best quality.
Works with x.com, twitter.com, fxtwitter, vxtwitter and fixupx links.
When you need more than a trim: iMovie
The Photos editor is perfect for cutting the start and end, but it can't remove a section from the middle or join two clips. For that, Apple's free iMovie app is the next step.
Install iMovie from the App Store if it isn't already on your phone.
Tap Start New Project and choose Movie.
Select your saved video and tap Create Movie.
Tap the clip in the timeline, move the playhead to where you want to cut, and tap Split under Actions.
Tap the part you don't want and choose Delete.
Tap Done, then the Share icon, and choose Save Video.
iMovie also lets you add titles, music and transitions. It takes a few more minutes to learn, but it gives you full control over the final clip.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Trimming the Files copy. You can only trim with these tools once the video is in Photos. Move it there first.
Overwriting the original. Choose Save Video as New Clip if you might want the full video later.
Downloading a low quality. If the clip will be shown on a big screen, download the highest quality available. Trimming does not improve resolution.
Forgetting about GIFs. If the clip was a GIF on X, it saved as a short MP4 that loops. You can trim it the same way. The X GIF downloader explains the format.
Sharing your trimmed clip
Once trimmed, the clip behaves like any other video in Photos. Tap Share to send it in Messages, WhatsApp or email, or to add it to a note. If you want to post it on another platform, our guide on sharing an X video on WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok covers the details.
Before sharing, remember the clip came from someone else. Only share content you own or have permission to use, and credit the original creator.
FAQ
Can I trim a Twitter video without downloading it first?
No. The X app does not offer trimming for other people's videos. Save the video with a tool like ClipDrift, move it to Photos, and trim it there.
Does trimming reduce the video quality?
Trimming in Photos keeps the quality close to the original. It cannot add detail, so download the highest quality you need before trimming.
How do I undo a trim?
Open the video in Photos, tap Edit and then Revert. This restores the original length, as long as you saved over the original rather than as a new clip.
Can I trim the middle out of a video?
Not in Photos, which only trims the start and end. For cutting out a middle section, use iMovie or another editor.
Will the creator know I trimmed their video?
No. Trimming happens on your iPhone and nothing is sent to X. Still, only share clips you have permission to use.
Does this work on iPad?
Yes. The Photos app on iPad has the same Edit and trim tools.
