The download bar finished, you tap the file, and nothing happens. Or the video opens but shows a black screen, freezes after a second, or plays with no sound. When a downloaded Twitter video won't play, the problem is usually simple: an incomplete file, the wrong app, a setting on your device, or occasionally a format your player doesn't support.
This guide walks through quick checks that solve most problems, then device-specific fixes for iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac and Chromebook. It applies to MP4 files saved from X (formerly Twitter) with any downloader, including ClipDrift.
Quick checks first
1. Is the file complete?
Check the file's size. A real video is usually at least several hundred kilobytes, and HD clips are often many megabytes. A file of only a few kilobytes is incomplete or broken.
Windows: right-click the file and choose Properties.
Mac: select the file and press Cmd+I.
Android: long-press the file in your file manager and choose Details or Info.
iPhone: in the Files app, long-press the file and choose Get Info.
If it's tiny, delete it and download again.
2. Did the download finish?
A download interrupted by a weak connection or a locked phone can leave a partial file. Check your browser's downloads list for errors, then try again on Wi-Fi.
3. Is it the right file?
Make sure the file ends in .mp4. If you downloaded something that ends in .exe, .apk or .zip, don't open it; it isn't a video. Our guide on spotting fake download buttons explains how that can happen on some sites.
Common symptoms and fixes
The video has no sound
It was a GIF. GIFs on X are silent, so their MP4 files have no audio. That's normal. Our article on why Twitter GIFs are saved as MP4 files explains.
Your device is muted. Check the volume and, on iPhone, the silent switch or Action button.
The original had no sound. Play the video on X to confirm.
Black screen with sound
Your player may not support the video's codec, or your device's video acceleration is misbehaving. Try a different player such as VLC, or update your current player and your operating system.
Freezes or stutters
The file may be partly corrupted, or your device may be struggling with a high resolution. Download again, or choose a lower quality in the X video downloader.
"Unsupported format" or "can't play this file"
Make sure the file name ends in .mp4. If it was renamed, rename it back. Then try VLC, which handles almost any format.
Sound and picture are out of sync
This is rare with files saved directly from X, but it can happen after a video has been edited, converted or compressed. Play the original download to see if the problem is there too. If only an edited copy is out of sync, re-export it from your editor, or start again from the original file. VLC also has an audio delay setting that can fix small offsets during playback.
The video plays sideways or upside down
Some players ignore the rotation information stored in a file. Try another player first. If you need to fix it permanently, the Photos app on iPhone, Google Photos on Android, and the Photos app on Windows can all rotate a video and save a corrected copy.
Fixes by device
iPhone and iPad
Open the video in the Files app, where Safari saves downloads. Tap it to play.
If it won't play in Files, tap Share and Save Video to move it to Photos, then try there.
Restart your iPhone if videos generally won't play.
Our guide on where downloads go on iPhone explains the folders.
Android
Open the file from your browser's downloads list or your file manager.
If your gallery doesn't play it, try VLC for Android, which is free.
If the file doesn't appear in your gallery, see where downloads go on Android.
Windows
Right-click the file, choose Open with, and try Media Player, Movies & TV or VLC.
Update Windows and your graphics drivers if many videos show a black screen.
Mac
Press the Space bar in Finder to preview with Quick Look, or open it in QuickTime Player.
If QuickTime won't play it, try VLC.
Chromebook
Double-click the file in the Files app to open it in the built-in Gallery app.
If it fails, download the video again or try a lower quality.
Download any X video in seconds
Paste a post link below to save the video, GIF or image in the best quality.
Works with x.com, twitter.com, fxtwitter, vxtwitter and fixupx links.
When to re-download
Re-downloading fixes most problems. When you do:
Use a stable connection, preferably Wi-Fi.
Keep your screen on and the browser open until the download finishes.
Choose a quality that suits your device; a medium resolution often plays more smoothly on older phones.
Make sure you have enough free storage.
You can paste x.com or twitter.com links into the Twitter video downloader; both formats work. GIFs save through the X GIF downloader. If the download itself fails, our guide on why a Twitter video won't download covers those issues.
Preventing playback problems next time
A few habits make broken downloads much rarer:
Download on Wi-Fi when you can, especially for long or HD videos.
Don't switch apps mid-download on a phone. Some browsers pause or cancel downloads in the background.
Keep some free storage. A download that runs out of space stops partway and leaves an unplayable file.
Keep your apps updated. Browser and system updates often include fixes for media playback.
Rename carefully. If you rename a file, keep the .mp4 ending so your device knows how to open it.
Following these steps means most downloads will open first time, on any device.
Choosing a reliable player
Built-in players handle standard MP4 files well, but a free, versatile player is handy to have. Our comparison of the best free MP4 video players covers good options for every device, including VLC.
Only download content you own or have permission to use. You can start a fresh download from the ClipDrift homepage.
FAQ
Why won't my downloaded Twitter video play?
The file may be incomplete, your player may not support it, or a device setting may interfere. Check the file size, download again and try VLC.
Why does my downloaded GIF have no sound?
GIFs on X are silent, so the MP4 file has no audio track.
How do I play a downloaded video on iPhone?
Open it in the Files app, or tap Share and Save Video to move it to Photos.
What is the best player for MP4 files?
Built-in players work for most files. VLC is a free option that plays almost anything on every device.
Why does the video show a black screen?
Usually a codec or graphics issue. Try another player and update your device's software.
Should I download in a lower quality?
If an older device struggles with HD playback, a medium resolution often plays more smoothly.
