You tap a link, open a quote post or scroll back through an old thread, and instead of the content you see a gray box: "This post is unavailable." Sometimes it adds a short explanation, and sometimes it doesn't. The message appears for several different reasons on X (formerly Twitter), and understanding which one applies tells you whether the post is gone for good or just hidden from you.
This guide explains each reason, how to tell them apart, and what it means if you were hoping to view or download the video in that post.
Seven reasons a post is unavailable
The message looks the same in each case, but the cause makes a big difference. Some reasons are permanent, some are temporary, and some only affect certain people.
Reason 1: The post was deleted
The most common cause. When the author deletes a post, it disappears everywhere: from their profile, from replies and from quote posts that embedded it. Quotes keep the commenter's text but show the "unavailable" box where the original used to be.
Can you still see it? No. X doesn't provide a way to view deleted posts. If you didn't save the video before it was deleted, it can't be recovered through X. That's one reason people download clips they care about. Our comparison of X bookmarks vs downloading explains why a bookmark alone doesn't protect against deletion.
Reason 2: The account is protected
If an account switches to protected, only approved followers can see its posts. Everyone else, including people who previously saw the posts publicly, sees an unavailable message or a note that the posts are protected.
Can you still see it? Only if you follow the account and your request is approved. Downloaders can't access protected posts, because they aren't public.
Reason 3: The account is suspended or deactivated
If X suspends an account, or the owner deactivates it, its posts become unavailable. Deactivated accounts can sometimes be restored by the owner within a limited period, in which case the posts reappear.
Can you still see it? Not while the account is suspended or deactivated.
Reason 4: Age-restricted or sensitive content
Posts marked as sensitive or age-restricted may show a warning, or require you to log in and confirm your age settings before viewing. In some cases, people who aren't logged in see the post as unavailable.
Can you still see it? Logged-in users with the right settings may be able to. Tools that don't log in, such as ClipDrift, generally can't reach these posts.
Reason 5: You're blocked
If the author has blocked you, you can't see their posts while logged in. You may see a message saying you're blocked, or the post may appear unavailable.
Can you still see it? The block applies to your account. Respect the author's choice.
Reason 6: Withheld in your country
Some posts are withheld in specific countries because of local laws or legal requests. People in those regions see a message that the content isn't available in their country.
Can you still see it? Not from that region.
Reason 7: Removed for breaking the rules or copyright
X may remove posts, or just the media in them, for violating its rules or after a copyright complaint. Sometimes the text remains but the video is replaced with a notice.
Can you still see it? No. The content has been taken down.
How to tell which reason applies
Check the message. Sometimes X explains: "deleted by the author", "from an account that no longer exists", or "you're unable to view this post".
Visit the profile. If the profile says the account is suspended, doesn't exist, or posts are protected, that's your answer.
Open the link in a private window. If it works there but not in your app, you may be blocked. If it fails everywhere, it's deleted, protected or suspended.
Check other posts from the account. If they load, the problem is with that specific post.

If it's your own post
Seeing your own post as unavailable is worrying, but there's usually a clear explanation.
Your account is protected. People who don't follow you will see your posts as unavailable. Check Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety, then Audience and tagging.
The post was flagged or removed. X usually notifies you if a post was removed or limited for breaking the rules, and may explain how to appeal.
A copyright claim was made. If someone filed a copyright complaint about your video, X may withhold the media and send you details. If you believe the claim is mistaken, X's Help Center explains how to respond.
It's a regional restriction. Some posts are withheld only in certain countries, so friends abroad may see something different from you.
If your post was removed and you don't have the original video saved, it can be hard to get back. That's one more reason to keep copies of everything you post. Our guide on backing up your X videos covers the official archive and other options.
What it means for downloading
A downloader can only save posts that are publicly visible. If a post shows as unavailable to the public, no legitimate tool can retrieve it. When ClipDrift reports a post as unavailable, it usually means one of the reasons above.
If you're sure the post is public, the problem may be the link. Our guide on why a Twitter video won't download covers link mistakes and other fixes. For public posts, you can paste the link into the X video downloader, the Twitter video downloader or the X GIF downloader.
Save what matters while you can
Posts can disappear without warning. If a video is important to you, such as a family moment, a tutorial or your own content, save it when you see it. Our guide on backing up your X videos explains how to protect your own posts.
Only download content you own or have permission to use. You can save media from any public post on the ClipDrift homepage.
