The iPad is a great device for watching clips from X. The screen is big, the speakers are decent, and it is easy to prop up on a table. It is also a good place to collect videos for a project or a presentation. But the X app on iPad, like the one on iPhone, has no download button. If you want to save X videos on iPad, you need a browser-based tool and a few minutes to learn where files go.

This guide covers the whole process, from copying the link to keeping the video in Photos. It also shows a couple of iPad-only tricks, like Split View, that make collecting several clips much faster.

What you need before you start

You don't need to install anything. Every iPad from recent years can do this with built-in apps:

  • The X app or X open in a browser, to find the post.

  • Safari (or another browser) to open ClipDrift.

  • The Files app, where downloads are saved.

  • The Photos app, if you want the video in your library.

How to save X videos on iPad, step by step

  1. Open the post on X and tap the share icon under it.

  2. Choose Copy link.

  3. Open Safari and go to the ClipDrift X video downloader.

  4. Tap the box, choose Paste, and tap Download.

  5. ClipDrift shows a preview and a list of qualities. Tap the one you want.

  6. If Safari asks for confirmation, tap Download.

The video is now in the Files app. The next section shows how to find it and move it.

Using X in Safari instead of the app

You don't need the X app at all. If you browse X in Safari, open the post, tap the address bar and copy the link from there. Then open a new tab with ClipDrift and paste it. Older links that start with twitter.com work just as well; the Twitter video downloader accepts both, so it doesn't matter which one you copied. Using Safari for both also means you can keep X and ClipDrift in separate tabs and switch between them quickly.

Choosing a quality on iPad

The iPad screen is large, so a higher resolution usually looks better. If X has an HD version of the video, it appears at the top of the list. Choose a smaller size only if you are short on storage. Keep in mind that the options depend on what the uploader posted; no tool can add detail that was never there.

Finding the video and moving it to Photos

  1. Open the Files app.

  2. Tap Downloads in the sidebar. If it is not there, look under iCloud Drive or On My iPad.

  3. Tap the video to open it.

  4. Tap the Share icon and choose Save Video.

The video now appears in Photos. If you are unsure where Safari stores downloads, our guide on where downloads go on iPhone applies to iPad too, including how to change the folder in Settings.

Work faster with Split View

If you are collecting several videos, switching apps over and over gets tiring. Split View lets you keep X and Safari open side by side.

  1. Open the X app.

  2. Tap the three dots at the top of the screen (the multitasking button).

  3. Tap the Split View option, then choose Safari from your Home Screen.

  4. Copy a link on the X side, paste it on the Safari side, download, and repeat.

On newer versions of iPadOS, you can also use Stage Manager to arrange windows freely. Either way, it turns a slow process into a quick routine.

A keyboard makes it even faster. If you use a Magic Keyboard or any Bluetooth keyboard, Cmd+C and Cmd+V work exactly as they do on a Mac, and Cmd+Tab switches between apps. Collecting ten clips for a presentation becomes a matter of a few minutes.

In Split View, you can often drag a link from one app and drop it into a text field in the other. It is worth trying, though copying and pasting is just as quick and works everywhere.

Download any X video in seconds

Paste a post link below to save the video, GIF or image in the best quality.

Works with x.com, twitter.com, fxtwitter, vxtwitter and fixupx links.

Saving GIFs and images on iPad

The same steps work for GIFs and images. GIFs on X are stored as short MP4 videos that loop, so they save as MP4 files rather than .gif files. Use the X GIF downloader if GIFs are what you collect, as it explains how to turn the MP4 into a real GIF when an app requires one. Images save at their original resolution.

Troubleshooting downloads on iPad

Most downloads work first time, but a few things can get in the way.

  • Nothing seems to happen. Safari may be waiting for you to confirm. Look for a small prompt asking whether to download the file, or check the download arrow in the toolbar.

  • The post is unavailable. ClipDrift can only reach public posts. Private, deleted and age-restricted posts can't be downloaded.

  • The video won't play. Try opening it in the Photos app after saving it there, or use a player such as VLC. Our guide on fixing a downloaded video that won't play has more ideas.

  • You are low on storage. Large HD videos need space. Check Settings, General, iPad Storage, and clear out old downloads in Files.

What to do with saved videos on iPad

  • Trim them in Photos. Open the video, tap Edit, and drag the handles to cut the start or end. Our guide to trimming a Twitter video on iPhone works the same way on iPad.

  • Add them to Keynote or Pages. Saved MP4 files drop straight into presentations and documents.

  • Use them in iMovie. If you have iMovie installed, you can combine several clips into one project.

Saving clips for personal use or a private presentation is common, but only download content you own or have permission to use, and credit creators if you share their work with permission.

FAQ

Can I save X videos on iPad without an app?

Yes. ClipDrift runs in Safari, so you only need the browser and the built-in Files and Photos apps.

Where do downloaded videos go on iPad?

They go to the Files app, in a folder called Downloads. It is usually in iCloud Drive, or in On My iPad if you changed the setting.

How do I move a video into Photos on iPad?

Open the video in Files, tap the Share icon and choose Save Video. It appears in your Photos library straight away.

Why does my GIF save as an MP4?

X stores GIFs as short looping MP4 videos. The file plays and loops in most apps, just like a GIF.

Can I download several videos at once?

You download one post at a time, but Split View makes it fast: keep X on one side and Safari on the other, then copy, paste and download each clip.

Do I need to log in to X?

No. ClipDrift works with public posts and never asks for your X account.
