Great clips rarely stay on one platform. You see something funny on X and want to send it to a family group on WhatsApp, or you post a video on X and want to reuse it on Instagram or TikTok. There are two ways to share an X video: send the link, or send the video file itself. Each has its place, and choosing the right one makes a big difference to quality, convenience and fairness to the creator.

This guide covers both methods for WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok, explains how to keep quality high, and shows how to credit the original creator when you repost.

The X app has a built-in share menu. Tap the share icon under the post and you'll see options to copy the link or send it directly to apps like WhatsApp or Messages.

When it works best:

  • Sending a clip to friends who use X or don't mind tapping a link.

  • Sharing quickly without using storage on your phone.

  • Keeping the creator's name, the caption and the replies attached.

The downsides: the recipient needs an internet connection and may need to open X to watch. If the post is deleted or the account goes private, the link stops working. In some chat apps, the preview doesn't play the video inline.

Option 2: Share the video file

Sending the MP4 file means the video plays directly in the chat, works for people who don't use X, and keeps working even if the original post disappears.

To get the file:

  1. Tap the share icon on the post and choose Copy link.

  2. Paste the link into the X video downloader and choose a quality.

  3. The MP4 saves to your phone. Our guides on where downloads go on iPhone and on Android show how to find it and move it to your gallery.

If the clip is a GIF, use the X GIF downloader. It saves as a small looping MP4, which is perfect for chats.

Sharing by email or in slides

Not every recipient uses chat apps. To send a clip by email, attach the downloaded MP4 like any other file. Large videos may exceed your email provider's attachment limit; in that case, upload the file to a cloud service such as iCloud Drive or Google Drive and share the link instead. For slides and documents, insert the MP4 directly into Keynote, PowerPoint or Google Slides so it plays without an internet connection.

How to share on WhatsApp

Copy the post link and paste it into the chat. WhatsApp shows a preview card. Recipients tap it to open the post.

Sending the video file

  1. Open the chat and tap the attachment (paperclip or plus) icon.

  2. Choose Gallery or Photos & videos and select the downloaded video.

  3. Add a message if you like, and tap Send.

WhatsApp compresses videos sent this way to keep them small. If quality matters, some versions offer an HD option before sending; otherwise, you can send the file as a Document, which keeps the original quality but won't play inline.

How to share on Instagram

In a direct message

Paste the X link into an Instagram DM, or attach the downloaded video from your gallery.

As a Story, post or Reel

To post a video publicly, you need the file. Open Instagram, tap the plus icon, choose Story, Post or Reel and select the video from your gallery. Instagram has its own length and format rules for each type, so very long clips may need trimming first. Our guide on trimming a downloaded Twitter video covers free tools.

Download any X video in seconds

Paste a post link below to save the video, GIF or image in the best quality.

Works with x.com, twitter.com, fxtwitter, vxtwitter and fixupx links.

How to share on TikTok

TikTok doesn't preview X links in the same way, so the file is usually the way to go.

  1. Open TikTok and tap the plus icon.

  2. Tap Upload and select the video from your gallery.

  3. Trim or edit inside TikTok, add a caption and post.

Vertical videos fill the screen on TikTok and Instagram Reels. Clips from X are often horizontal, so consider adding a background or cropping in an editor if you want a full-screen look.

Adding context when you repost

A clip that made sense on X can be confusing on another platform without the original post's text. Add a short caption that explains what is happening and why it matters. If you have permission to repost, put the creator's name and handle near the start of the caption, where people will see it before tapping "more". On TikTok, a text overlay in the first second is another clear way to show where the clip came from.

Keep the quality high

  • Download the best quality. Start with the highest resolution available when you plan to repost. Every app compresses again on upload, so starting sharp helps.

  • Don't screen record. Screen recordings capture your screen's interface and lose quality. Our comparison of screen recording vs downloading explains why.

  • Avoid re-sharing compressed copies. A video that has been forwarded several times in chats loses quality each time. Go back to the original post and download it fresh.

Reposting: permission and credit

Sending a funny clip to a friend in a private chat is very different from posting someone else's video on your public account. Reposting can infringe copyright and is often against the rules of the platform you post on.

  • Your own videos: go ahead. Our guide on repurposing your X videos has tips for each platform.

  • Someone else's videos: ask the creator first. Our guide on asking permission to repost a video includes a simple message template.

  • Always credit: mention the creator's name and X handle in the caption, and link to the original post where possible.

FAQ

What's the easiest way to share an X video on WhatsApp?

Copy the post link and paste it into the chat. If the recipient doesn't use X, download the video and send the file instead.

Can I post an X video on Instagram?

Yes, if it is your own video or you have the creator's permission. Download the MP4, then upload it as a Story, post or Reel.

Why does my video look worse after sharing?

Chat and social apps compress videos when you upload them. Start with the highest quality download to keep the result as sharp as possible.

Do I need the X app to share a video?

No. You only need the post link, which you can copy from the app or from x.com in a browser.

Is it okay to repost someone's X video on TikTok?

Only with their permission. Credit them by name and handle, and follow TikTok's own rules on reposting content.

Will the creator know I shared their video?

Sharing a link doesn't notify them, and downloading with ClipDrift doesn't either. If you repost publicly, tag them so they know and get credit.
