You paste a link, tap Download, see the progress bar finish, and then nothing seems to happen. The video is not in your Photos app, and you are left wondering where do downloads go on iPhone. It is one of the most common questions people ask after saving their first video from X (formerly Twitter).
The answer is that iPhones keep downloaded files separate from your photo library. Safari saves them in the Files app, and you decide whether to move them into Photos. Once you know where to look, finding and organizing your downloads takes seconds.
Where Safari saves your downloads
When you download a file in Safari, iOS stores it in the Files app rather than in Photos. This applies to videos, images, PDFs and anything else you download from a website.
To find it:
Open the Files app. It has a blue folder icon.
Tap Browse at the bottom of the screen.
Open iCloud Drive and then the Downloads folder.
Your video should be at the top if you sort by date.
If you don't see a Downloads folder in iCloud Drive, check On My iPhone instead. Some people change this setting, and others have iCloud Drive turned off, in which case iOS saves files on the device.
Why the download seems to do nothing
On iPhone, a finished download doesn't pop up or play automatically, so it can feel as if nothing happened. In most cases the file is already in Files. If Safari showed a prompt asking whether to download the file, make sure you tapped Download rather than View. Viewing opens the video in Safari without saving a copy, and closing the tab loses it. If you are not sure, open Files and check the Downloads folder before downloading again, so you don't end up with duplicates.
A faster way from Safari
While Safari is open, a small download arrow often appears in or near the address bar after a download finishes. Tapping it shows your recent downloads, and tapping a file opens it straight away. This is handy right after you save a video.
How to move a video from Files to Photos
Most people want their saved videos in the Photos app, next to their own clips. Moving one takes a few taps.
Open the video in the Files app.
Tap the Share icon (the square with an arrow pointing up).
Choose Save Video.
Open Photos. The video appears in your library and in the Recents album.
The copy in Files stays where it is. Once the video is in Photos, you can delete the Files copy to save space. Our guide to trimming a Twitter video on iPhone shows what you can do next in the Photos app.
How to change where downloads go
If you would rather keep downloads on the device instead of in iCloud, you can change the folder.
Open Settings.
Scroll down and tap Apps, then Safari. On older versions of iOS, Safari appears directly in the Settings list.
Tap Downloads.
Choose iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, or Other to pick a specific folder.
Keeping downloads on the device can be faster and avoids using iCloud storage, which is useful if your iCloud plan is nearly full.
The trade-off is that files stored On My iPhone are not backed up to iCloud Drive and won't appear on your other Apple devices. If you rely on iCloud to move clips between your iPhone, iPad and Mac, keep the default setting and simply delete downloads you no longer need.
Download any X video in seconds
Paste a post link below to save the video, GIF or image in the best quality.
Works with x.com, twitter.com, fxtwitter, vxtwitter and fixupx links.
Downloads from other browsers and apps
Chrome, Firefox and other browsers on iPhone also save files through the Files app, though the folder can differ. In Chrome, for example, downloads usually appear in a Chrome folder under On My iPhone. If you can't find a file, open Files, tap Browse, and use the search bar at the top. Searching for ".mp4" or part of the file name usually finds it quickly.
Saving X videos on iPhone with ClipDrift
ClipDrift works in Safari, so there is no app to install. The whole process looks like this:
In the X app, tap the share icon on a post and choose Copy link.
Open Safari and go to the ClipDrift X downloader.
Paste the link, tap Download and choose a quality.
Find the MP4 in Files, then save it to Photos as shown above.
GIFs save the same way. They arrive as small MP4 files that loop, because that is how X stores them. The X GIF downloader explains the format, and the save tweet video page has more tips for keeping clips on your phone. If you prefer a full walkthrough, our tutorial on how to save Twitter videos covers iPhone, Android and desktop.
Only download content you own or have permission to use.
Keeping your downloads tidy
Video files are large, and the Downloads folder fills up quickly. A few habits help:
Delete after moving. Once a video is in Photos, remove the copy in Files.
Create folders. Long-press in Files and choose New Folder to group clips by topic.
Check storage. In Settings, General, iPhone Storage, you can see how much space Files and Photos are using.
If you also use an iPad, the steps are almost identical. Our guide on saving X videos on iPad covers the small differences.
Sending a download to your Mac
If you want to edit a clip on a bigger screen, AirDrop is the fastest way to move it. Open the video in Files or Photos, tap Share, choose AirDrop and pick your Mac. The file lands in the Mac's Downloads folder within seconds, at full quality. If AirDrop isn't available, saving the file to iCloud Drive makes it appear in Finder on any Mac signed in to the same Apple account.
FAQ
Why isn't my downloaded video in Photos?
Safari saves downloads to the Files app, not to Photos. Open the video in Files, tap Share, and choose Save Video to add it to your library.
Where is the Downloads folder on iPhone?
Open the Files app, tap Browse, then look in iCloud Drive or On My iPhone for a folder called Downloads.
Can I make Safari save straight to Photos?
No. Safari always saves to a folder in Files. You can choose which folder in Settings, but moving a video into Photos is a separate step.
Do downloads use my iCloud storage?
They do if the Downloads folder is in iCloud Drive, which is the default. Switch the folder to On My iPhone in Safari's settings to keep files on the device.
How do I find a download I can't see?
Open Files, tap Browse and use the search bar. Search for ".mp4" or part of the file name.
Does this work on iPad too?
Yes. iPad uses the same Files app and the same Safari download settings.
