Few things are more annoying than an "Android storage full" warning right when you want to take a photo or install an update. Videos are often the reason. A single HD clip can take tens or hundreds of megabytes, and if you save clips from X (formerly Twitter) regularly, the Download folder can quietly grow into one of the biggest things on your phone.
This guide shows how to find out what is using your space, clear old downloads safely, back up the clips you want to keep, and download smarter so the problem doesn't come back.
Step 1: See what is using your storage
Open Settings.
Tap Storage (on some phones it is under Battery and device care, or Device care).
Look at the breakdown. Categories like Videos, Images, Apps and Files show how much space each uses.
If Videos or Files are near the top, your downloads are a likely cause. Tapping a category usually opens a list of the files inside it.
Step 2: Find the largest downloaded videos
A file manager makes this easy.
Open Files by Google, My Files on Samsung, or your phone's file app.
Go to Downloads or the Download folder.
Sort by size, largest first. In Files by Google, tap the sort option at the top of the list.
Play anything you don't recognize to check what it is.
Files by Google also has a Clean tab that suggests large files, duplicates and old downloads you might not need anymore. It is a quick way to free up a lot of space safely.
Clear app caches too
Downloads are not the only hidden space users. Apps keep temporary files, called a cache, so they load faster. Social apps, browsers and streaming apps can build up a large cache over time, including copies of videos you have watched.
To clear one, open Settings, tap Apps, choose the app, then tap Storage and Clear cache. This removes temporary files without deleting your account or settings. Avoid Clear data unless you are happy to sign in again and lose that app's saved settings. Clearing the cache of the X app and your browser is a safe first step when space is tight.
Step 3: Back up what you want to keep
Before deleting anything, make sure the clips you care about are saved somewhere else.
Google Photos backup. In Google Photos, open Library, find the Download folder and turn on backup. Once uploaded, you can use the "Free up space" option to remove the device copies.
A computer. Connect your phone with a USB cable, choose File transfer on the phone, and copy the Download folder to your computer.
An SD card. If your phone has one, move older videos to it with your file manager.
Check the backup worked
Before you delete anything, open the backup and play one or two of the videos. In Google Photos, look for the cloud icon on a video, or open it on another device. On a computer, open the copied folder and check that the files play and are the right size. It takes a minute and protects you from losing clips you thought were safe.
Step 4: Delete old and duplicate downloads
With a backup in place, delete the files you don't need. Common culprits include:
The same video downloaded twice in different qualities.
Clips you saved for a one-time chat and never watched again.
Old downloads from months ago that have since been backed up.
After deleting, check the Trash or Recently deleted folder in your file manager or gallery. Some apps keep deleted files for 30 days, which means the space isn't freed until you empty it.
Download any X video in seconds

Download smarter to save space
The easiest way to avoid a full phone is to download only what you need.
Choose the right quality. When you save a video with the ClipDrift X video downloader, you can pick from every resolution X has. A medium size like 720p looks sharp on a phone screen and is much smaller than the top option.
Trim before you keep. If you only need a few seconds, trim the clip and delete the full version. Our guide to trimming a downloaded Twitter video shows free ways to do it.
GIFs are already small. GIFs from X save as compact MP4 files that loop. The X GIF downloader is the lightest way to keep a reaction clip.
Compress large clips. If you need to keep a long video, compress it. Our guide on compressing a video without losing quality explains how.
How quality affects file size
File size depends on resolution, length and how much movement is in the video. A long, high-resolution clip with lots of action is far larger than a short, low-resolution clip of someone talking. As a rule of thumb, each step up in resolution makes the file noticeably bigger, and doubling the length roughly doubles the size.
That is why choosing the quality on purpose matters. For a clip you will only watch on your phone or send in a chat, a medium size is plenty. Save the highest quality for videos you plan to edit, show on a big screen or keep for the long term. You can check a file's size in your file manager by long-pressing it and choosing Details or Info.
Change where new downloads go
If your phone supports an SD card, you can send new downloads there. In Chrome, open Settings, then Downloads, and choose the download location. Our guide on where downloads go on Android covers this and other browsers.
Build a simple habit
Once a month, open your Download folder, sort by size and delete what you don't need. It takes two minutes and keeps your phone fast. If you save a lot of clips from X, create one folder for keepers and treat everything left in Download as temporary.
Only download content you own or have permission to use. You can always start a new download from the ClipDrift homepage when you need a clip again.
FAQ
How do I find large videos on my Android phone?
Open your file manager, go to Downloads or Videos, and sort by size. Files by Google also suggests large files in its Clean tab.
Does deleting a video from my gallery delete it from the phone?
Yes, for videos stored on the device. Check the gallery's Trash or Recently deleted folder afterward, since files may stay there for up to 30 days.
Will lower quality videos really save space?
Yes. A medium resolution is often several times smaller than the highest one, and it still looks sharp on a phone screen.
Can I move downloads to an SD card?
If your phone has an SD card slot, use your file manager to move files there, or set Chrome to save new downloads to the card.
Is it safe to delete files in the Download folder?
Usually, yes, as long as you have backed up anything you want to keep. Downloads are copies of files from the internet, not system files.
How often should I clear my downloads?
A quick monthly cleanup is enough for most people. Heavy downloaders may want to do it every week or two.
