Sometimes the sound is the point. It might be a short interview, a speech, a podcast clip or a voice note someone posted on X. Watching a video just to listen is clumsy, and an audio file is easier to play in the background, add to a playlist or use in an edit. This guide shows how to convert an X video to MP3 with free tools you can trust.
There are two stages. First, you download the video from X (formerly Twitter) as an MP4. Then you extract the audio track into an MP3 file. ClipDrift handles the first part; for the second, you'll use a free tool such as VLC, Audacity or ffmpeg. ClipDrift itself doesn't convert to MP3, so this guide is honest about which tool does what.
Step 1: Download the video from X
On X, tap the share icon under the post and choose Copy link.
Paste it into the ClipDrift X video downloader.
Pick the highest quality and save the MP4.
Audio quality is usually tied to the video version, so choosing the top resolution gives you the best sound. If your link starts with twitter.com rather than x.com, it works the same way; the Twitter video downloader accepts old and new links alike. If you are on a computer, our guides on downloading Twitter videos on Windows and downloading X videos on a Mac show where the file ends up.
A quick note on GIFs
GIFs on X are silent. They are stored as short MP4 videos with no audio track, so there is nothing to convert. If a clip on X has sound, it was uploaded as a video, not a GIF.
Step 2: Convert the MP4 to MP3
Choose the tool that suits you. All three are free and open source.
Option A: VLC media player
VLC is a popular free media player that also converts files.
Install VLC from its official website, videolan.org, and open it.
Click Media, then Convert / Save (on a Mac: File, then Convert / Stream).
Click Add and choose your MP4 file, then click Convert / Save.
In the Profile list, choose Audio - MP3.
Click Browse, choose where to save, and give the file a name ending in .mp3.
Click Start. The progress bar shows the conversion.
VLC is a good choice if you only need the audio and don't want to edit it.
Option B: Audacity
Audacity is a free audio editor. It is ideal when you want to trim the start and end, remove silence or normalize the volume before saving.
Install Audacity from its official website.
Choose File, then Import, then Audio, and select your MP4. Recent versions open MP4 files directly; older versions may ask you to install the FFmpeg library, and Audacity explains how.
Select any parts you don't want and press Delete.
Choose File, then Export Audio (or Export as MP3 on older versions).
Pick MP3, choose a quality and save.
Option C: ffmpeg
ffmpeg is a command-line tool used by professionals. Once installed, a single command extracts high-quality audio:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vn -q:a 2 output.mp3
Here, "-vn" drops the video, and "-q:a 2" sets a high variable bitrate for the MP3. Use a lower number for higher quality and larger files, or a higher number for smaller files.
Converting on a phone
On a phone, the simplest route is to download the MP4 with ClipDrift and use a reputable converter app from the App Store or Google Play. Look for apps with good reviews, clear privacy policies and no unusual permissions. Avoid apps that ask for access to your contacts or accounts; converting a file needs neither.
You can also skip conversion entirely. Most phones play the audio of an MP4 just fine in a video player, and some music apps can add video files to a library. If you only want to listen occasionally, the MP4 may be all you need.

MP3, M4A or keep the MP4?
MP3 works everywhere: cars, old music players, every app. It is the safest choice for compatibility.
M4A (AAC) is often slightly smaller for the same quality, and works well on Apple devices and modern apps.
MP4 keeps the video. If you might want the picture later, keep the original file alongside the audio.
Converting from one compressed format to another can lose a little quality, so always convert from the original MP4 rather than from an earlier conversion.
Naming and tagging your audio files
Music apps rely on tags such as title and artist to sort files. After converting, add basic tags so the clip doesn't show up as "Unknown". In Audacity, the export window lets you fill in metadata. On a computer, you can also edit tags in your music app. Including the speaker's name and the date makes it easy to find the clip later and to credit the source correctly.
Use the audio responsibly
Audio clips are easy to lift and reuse, which makes them easy to misuse. Interviews, music and podcasts are usually protected by copyright. Converting a clip for personal listening is very different from putting it in your own video or podcast. Only download and convert content you own or have permission to use, and credit the original creator. Our guide to fair use for video clips explains the basics, and you can always start a new download from the ClipDrift homepage.
Troubleshooting
No sound in the MP3. The original was probably a GIF or a silent video. Check the MP4 plays with sound first.
Audacity won't open the MP4. Install the FFmpeg library as Audacity suggests, or use VLC instead.
VLC produces a file that won't play. Make sure the file name ends in .mp3 and that you chose the "Audio - MP3" profile.
The audio is quiet. Use Audacity's Normalize or Amplify effect before exporting.
