A Windows PC is often the best place to work with video. You have a big screen, a proper keyboard, plenty of storage and free tools for trimming and editing. If you want to download Twitter videos on Windows, you don't need to install any software either. Everything happens in the browser you already use, whether that is Edge, Chrome or Firefox.
This guide covers the full process on Windows 10 and Windows 11: copying the link from X (formerly Twitter), downloading the MP4, finding it on your PC, and the built-in apps you can use to play and trim it.
What you need
You don't need extra software, an X account or a ClipDrift account. You need:
A web browser such as Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome or Firefox.
The link to a public post on X that contains a video.
A little free disk space, since HD videos can be large.
How to download Twitter videos on Windows, step by step
Open x.com in your browser and find the post with the video.
Click the post so it opens on its own page.
Click the address bar, select the link and press Ctrl+C. You can also click the share icon under the post and choose Copy link.
Open a new tab with Ctrl+T and go to the Twitter video downloader.
Click the box, press Ctrl+V to paste, and click Download.
ClipDrift shows a preview and a list of qualities. Click the one you want.
The download starts right away. Because the file streams directly from X's servers, there is no waiting for a copy to be prepared.
Which quality should you pick?
On a desktop monitor, the highest resolution usually looks best. If X has an HD version, it appears at the top of the list. Choose a smaller size only if you are saving lots of clips and want to conserve disk space, or if the video is just for a quick chat. The options depend on the original upload, so a video posted in low resolution will only have low-resolution versions.
Where downloaded videos go on Windows
By default, every major browser saves files to your Downloads folder.
Open File Explorer (Windows key + E) and click Downloads in the left sidebar.
The full path is usually C:\Users\YourName\Downloads.
Sort by Date modified to see the newest file at the top.
The fastest shortcut
In Edge and Chrome, press Ctrl+J to open the downloads list. In Firefox, press Ctrl+Shift+Y. Click a file to open it, or click "Show in folder" to jump straight to it in File Explorer.
Changing the download folder
If you want videos to go somewhere else, such as a dedicated "X clips" folder, change it in your browser's settings. In Edge and Chrome, open Settings, then Downloads, and choose a new location. You can also turn on "Ask where to save each file" so you pick a folder every time.
Playing the video
Files from ClipDrift are standard MP4 videos, so Windows plays them without extra codecs.
Media Player is the default player in Windows 11 and recent versions of Windows 10. Double-click the file to open it.
Movies & TV may be the default on older Windows 10 installs and works the same way.
VLC is a free alternative that plays almost anything. Our guide to the best free MP4 video players compares options.
GIFs from X also download as MP4 files, because X stores them as short looping videos. They open in Media Player rather than an image viewer. If you need a real .gif, our guide on turning an X GIF into a .gif file shows how, and the X GIF downloader explains the format.
Download any X video in seconds
Paste a post link below to save the video, GIF or image in the best quality.
Works with x.com, twitter.com, fxtwitter, vxtwitter and fixupx links.
Trimming clips with built-in Windows apps
You often only need a few seconds of a video. Windows has free tools for that.
Photos app
Right-click the video and choose Open with, then Photos.
Look for the Trim option in the toolbar (on some versions it is under the "Edit" or "..." menu).
Drag the handles to set the start and end.
Save a copy so the original stays untouched.
Clipchamp
Windows 11 includes Clipchamp, a free video editor from Microsoft. It can cut out sections, join clips, add text and export in several resolutions. Open it from the Start menu, import your MP4 and drag it onto the timeline. Our guide on trimming a downloaded Twitter video for free covers Clipchamp and other options in more detail.
Common problems on Windows
The download is blocked. Some antivirus tools or browser settings flag downloads from new websites. Check the downloads list for a "Keep" option. MP4 files from ClipDrift are plain video files.
The post is unavailable. Only public posts can be downloaded. Private, deleted and age-restricted posts won't work.
The file won't play. It may be incomplete. Check its size in File Explorer and download it again if it is tiny. Our guide on fixing a downloaded video that won't play has more fixes.
Wrong video. You may have copied the link of a different post in a thread. Open the exact post with the video and copy its link.
Respecting creators
A PC makes it easy to collect and edit clips, which also makes it easy to forget where they came from. A simple habit helps: when you save a clip for a presentation or project, paste the original post link into a text file in the same folder, or into the slide notes. That way you can always credit the creator, check the context, or ask for permission if you decide to share the clip publicly later. Only download content you own or have permission to use, and credit creators if you share their work with permission. You can start any download from the ClipDrift homepage, which handles videos, GIFs and images.
