Macs are popular with creators, students and anyone who works with video, and X (formerly Twitter) is full of clips worth keeping for a project, a presentation or simply for later. There is no download button on X, but you can download X videos on a Mac in a few seconds using a browser and a free online tool. There is no app to install and nothing to configure.
This guide walks through the process in Safari and Chrome, shows where your files end up, and covers the free tools already on your Mac for playing and trimming clips.
How to download X videos on a Mac
The steps are the same in Safari, Chrome, Firefox or any other browser.
Open x.com and find the post with the video.
Click the post so it opens on its own page.
Click the address bar and press Cmd+C to copy the link. Or click the share icon under the post and choose Copy link.
Open a new tab with Cmd+T and go to the X video downloader.
Click the box, press Cmd+V and click Download.
Pick a quality from the list.
The MP4 begins downloading straight away. ClipDrift streams the file directly from X, so you get the original video with no watermark and no re-encoding.
Choosing the right quality
Mac screens are sharp, so the highest available quality usually looks best. X often stores HD versions when the uploader posted in HD, and those appear at the top of the list. If you are collecting many clips for reference only, a medium resolution saves disk space. Remember that a video can never look better than the version that was uploaded.
Where downloaded videos go on a Mac
Browsers on macOS save files to the Downloads folder by default.
Click the Downloads stack in the Dock, next to the Trash.
Or open Finder and choose Downloads in the sidebar.
Press Option+Cmd+L in Finder to open Downloads instantly.
Safari's downloads list
In Safari, a download button (an arrow) appears in the toolbar while files download. Click it to see recent downloads, or press Option+Cmd+L. Click the magnifying glass next to a file to show it in Finder.
Changing the download folder
In Safari, open Settings (or Preferences on older versions), go to the General tab and change File download location. In Chrome, open Settings, then Downloads, and choose a new folder. A dedicated "X clips" folder keeps your Downloads tidy.
Organizing clips with Finder tags
If you collect clips for different projects, Finder tags make them easy to find later. Right-click a video, choose a colored tag or create a new one, such as "Presentation" or "Reactions". Tagged files appear in the Finder sidebar under Tags, no matter which folder they are in. You can also add a short comment with the original post link by selecting the file and pressing Cmd+I, which helps when you need to credit the creator.
Playing and previewing clips
MP4 files play natively on macOS.
Quick Look. Select the file in Finder and press the Space bar to preview it instantly.
QuickTime Player. Double-click the file to open it in QuickTime, the default video player.
VLC. A free alternative that plays almost any format. Our guide to the best free MP4 video players compares a few.
GIFs from X arrive as MP4 files too, since X stores them as short looping videos. The X GIF downloader explains why, and our guide on turning an X GIF into a .gif file shows how to convert one if an app insists on the .gif format.

Trimming videos with QuickTime Player
QuickTime can trim the start and end of a clip in seconds.
Open the video in QuickTime Player.
Choose Edit, then Trim, or press Cmd+T.
Drag the yellow handles to set the start and end.
Click Trim.
Choose File, then Save (or Export As) to keep the trimmed version.
Exporting a smaller copy
QuickTime can also make a smaller version of a clip, which is useful for email or chat apps with size limits. Choose File, then Export As, and pick a lower resolution such as 720p or 480p. QuickTime saves a new file and leaves the original as it is. For bigger savings with more control, our guide on compressing a video without losing quality covers free tools like HandBrake.
For more advanced edits, such as cutting a section from the middle, joining clips or adding titles, iMovie is free on the Mac App Store. Our guide on trimming a downloaded Twitter video for free compares more tools.
Moving clips from iPhone to Mac
If you saved a video on your iPhone, AirDrop is the fastest way to bring it to your Mac. Open the video, tap Share, choose AirDrop and select your Mac. It lands in Downloads at full quality. Our guide on where downloads go on iPhone explains how to find files on the phone first.
Troubleshooting on a Mac
"Are you sure you want to download?" prompt. Safari sometimes asks before downloading from a new site. Click Allow.
Nothing happens. Check the download arrow in Safari's toolbar or press Option+Cmd+L.
The post is unavailable. ClipDrift only works with public posts. Private, deleted and age-restricted posts can't be downloaded.
The video won't play. It may be incomplete. Check the size in Finder with Cmd+I and download again if needed.
Wrong video in a thread. Each post in a thread has its own link. Open the exact post that contains the video and copy that link instead of the first post's.
A note on respecting creators
Saving clips on your Mac for reference, research or personal use is common. Reposting someone else's work without permission is a different matter. Only download content you own or have permission to use, and credit creators when you share their work. You can start any download from the ClipDrift homepage.
