Chromebooks are fast, simple and secure, which is why so many schools and families use them. The trade-off is that you can't install most traditional desktop software. The good news is that you don't need any. If you want to download Twitter videos on a Chromebook, the Chrome browser and a free online tool are all it takes.
This guide explains each step, from copying the link on X (formerly Twitter) to finding the MP4 in the Files app, playing it, trimming it and keeping your storage under control.
Why use a website instead of an extension?
Searching the Chrome Web Store turns up lots of downloader extensions. Many of them ask for permission to "read and change all your data on all websites", which is far more access than downloading a video needs. Some school and work Chromebooks also block extensions entirely.
A website like ClipDrift needs no permissions at all. You paste a link, and the file downloads like any other. Our comparison of an online downloader vs an extension vs an app explains the trade-offs in more detail.
How to download Twitter videos on a Chromebook
Open Chrome and go to x.com.
Click the post with the video so it opens on its own page.
Click the address bar and press Ctrl+C to copy the link. You can also click the share icon under the post and choose Copy link.
Open a new tab with Ctrl+T and go to the Twitter video downloader.
Press Ctrl+V to paste the link, then click Download.
Choose a quality. The MP4 downloads straight away.
That's all. You don't need an X account or a ClipDrift account.
Using a touchscreen or tablet mode
Many Chromebooks fold into tablet mode or have touchscreens. The steps still work: tap the post to open it, then tap the share icon under it and choose Copy link, because the address bar can be harder to reach by touch. In ClipDrift, tap and hold inside the box and choose Paste. If you use the Chromebook as a tablet often, keep ClipDrift pinned as a tab so it is always one tap away.
Picking a quality on a Chromebook
Many Chromebooks have limited storage, often 32 GB or 64 GB. If you are saving several clips, a medium resolution is a sensible choice. Save the highest quality for videos you plan to show on a projector or edit. The available options depend on what the uploader posted.
Where downloads go on a Chromebook
Downloads are saved in the Files app.
Open the Launcher (the circle icon in the corner) and search for Files.
In the left sidebar, click My files, then Downloads.
Your newest videos are at the top when you sort by date.
The fastest shortcut
Press Ctrl+J in Chrome to open the downloads list. Click a file to open it, or click "Show in folder" to jump to it in Files. A notification also appears in the corner when a download finishes; click it to open the file.
Keeping files safe in Google Drive
The Downloads folder lives on the Chromebook itself. If you want a backup, or want to see the file on your phone, drag it into Google Drive in the Files app sidebar. Files in Drive are available on any device where you sign in with the same account.
Playing and editing videos
MP4 files play natively on ChromeOS.
Gallery app. Double-click a video in Files to open it in the built-in Gallery (sometimes called Media App). It plays MP4 files and, on many models, offers basic tools.
Google Photos. On newer Chromebooks, Google Photos can trim videos and create simple movies. Availability depends on your model and ChromeOS version.
Online editors. Browser-based editors can trim and join clips without installing anything.
GIFs from X download as MP4 files because X stores them as short looping videos. The X GIF downloader explains why, and our guide on trimming a downloaded Twitter video covers free editing options for every device.
Download any X video in seconds
Paste a post link below to save the video, GIF or image in the best quality.
Works with x.com, twitter.com, fxtwitter, vxtwitter and fixupx links.
Saving GIFs and images on a Chromebook
The same steps work for every type of media on X. When a post contains GIFs or images, ClipDrift lists each item separately so you can choose exactly what to save.
GIFs download as small MP4 files that loop. They are great for slides and class projects because they are light and play smoothly.
Images download at their original resolution, which is usually much sharper than a screenshot.
Posts with several items show every photo, video and GIF, so you can save them one by one.
For students, this is handy for collecting examples for a presentation, as long as you credit the source and follow your school's rules. Saving from the ClipDrift homepage works for all three types in the same box.
Managing storage on a Chromebook
Small drives fill up quickly with video. Keep things tidy with a few habits:
Check storage. Open Settings, then Device, then Storage management to see what is using space.
Move keepers to Drive. Drag videos you want to keep into Google Drive, then delete the local copy.
Delete old downloads. Sort Downloads by size and remove clips you no longer need.
Download only what you need. Choosing a lower quality for casual clips saves a lot of space.
ChromeOS will also warn you when space is running low, and it may clear some cached files on its own. Don't rely on that for videos you care about: anything only stored in Downloads can be lost if the Chromebook is reset or powerwashed. Moving important clips to Google Drive is the simplest way to keep them safe.
School and work Chromebooks
If your Chromebook is managed by a school or employer, some websites or downloads may be blocked by the administrator. If ClipDrift doesn't load or downloads are disabled, that is a policy setting, not a fault. Ask your administrator, and remember that school and work devices often have rules about what you can save.
Whatever device you use, only download content you own or have permission to use. You can start any download from the ClipDrift homepage.
